Build your own Air Shield

using a good shield is a must
we don’t want weatherflow adding in accurate temperatures like other station’s do to wunderground !
I use a stevenson screen myself

Will you please be so kind as to post a photo of your screen when you are able?

I think everyone here would like to see and can benefit from your experience.

Are there 3d designers here that could model a solar radiation shield for 3d printing ?
I crossed this site during my surfing

This one isn’t ok for the Air module but the idea is there. If a group could make the plans, guess most of us can find a friend or shop that could print the thing … might be cheaper and for sure way better then the actual ones, that are according me way to small to ventilate properly. Except for the real stevenson screen and … that’s more 4 figures in price then 3 …

Could be a nice group work to design this no ? Crossing experts in air flow and a few 3d print geeks ??

is this work well for the AIR? because I’m searching for the good one with good price too.
so I hope you tell me about your experience with this one that you show in the picture?

I wasn’t happy with the performance. My detached garage has a north wall that’s always in the shade, and the Air has been tracking well against my solar-aspirated Acu-Rite’s readings at all times of the day/night mounted over there with no shield.

I came up with a crazy flowerpot idea using an AC-powered fan, but never followed through with it to see if the motor jammed the lightning sensor…

I tried using a couple different small CPU fans and it drove the lightning sensor crazy.

Why would you use a fan? That would create artificial cooling.

Am I missing something about drawing ambient air over a temperature probe generating colder than ambient measurements???

That’s why I’m asking.

I’ll just post links so you can read for yourself

Ah yes, because someone sells one. Yeah, that’s a good reason.

This is a ventilated shelter I made a few years ago. Two foil lined bubblewrap tubes, cpu fan
pulling air through both. Air pulled past sensor is not affected by any amount of solar radiation
at all. Also not effected by radiational cooling at night. Air mounted out in the open can read low, (Temp 38f , frost on ground-car tops). Did not use this for my air, due to foil might effect radio trans and receive. My air is in a new design using styrofoam and corrugated poly. I will get pic and post.

Very cool design! Love the things that weather enthusiasts come up with to solve a problem.

Now that’s a great explanation. Thank you for taking the time to post the photo and explain what you did.

@vreihen I take it that the idea is to draw a slow constant stream of ambient air across the device in lieu of placing it in an area where it will receive natural air flow. Is this correct? Is this the purpose of the Acu-Rite device fan?

In low wind conditions, no matter where the location is, there is not enough air flow to carry away radiated heat within the shield. This is a very common problem in small shields that are used in a home system. A fan maintains the air flow bringing in ambient air.
